Overview

Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) methods -- intrauterine devices (IUDs) and the contraceptive implant -- provide patients with top tier, reliable pregnancy prevention options for up to 3-12 years.

Essential Access Health is offering FREE clinical LARC trainings for providers in Los Angeles County. Participants will achieve competency in the skills needed to provide high-quality LARC placement and removal services, that includes:

  • effective patient-centered contraceptive counseling
  • identifying candidates who can safely use LARC methods
  • techniques for method placement and removal
  • best practices for preventing and managing complications

Fundamental Skills IUD Training on Placement + Removal:
Participants will receive background information and learn placement techniques for the five FDA-approved IUDs: ParaGard®, Mirena®, Skyla®, Kyleena® and Liletta®. This training includes supervised hands-on practice with nationally recognized trainers and experienced preceptors.
Participants are strongly encouraged to take the Advanced Skills Training immediately following the Fundamental Skills training.

Implant Placement + Removal:
Participants will learn how to identify appropriate patients for Nexplanon™, prepare patients for placement, and manage technical issues. Upon completion, participants will become certified in Nexplanon™ by Merck.

Advanced Skills IUD Training on Challenging Placements + Removals:
This hands-on session focuses on the skills necessary for mastering challenging IUD placements and removals. Techniques will be reviewed for the safe use of the tenaculum, uterine sound, and all inserter types. Tips for avoiding common IUD placement pitfalls will be provided. Participants will practice techniques for managing cervical stenosis, providing adequate pain relief during and after placement, removing IUDs without strings and preventing vasovagal syncope and uterine perforation.

Continuing Education Credits:

  • IUD Trainings: CME = 4.0 credits, Nursing = 4.8 credits
  • Nexplanon™ Trainings: 0 contact hours (sponsored by Merck)

Mentorship Opportunities: A LARC Mentor Training opportunity will be offered in May 2019 for those who complete the Advanced Skills IUD Training and are interested in becoming a mentor/preceptor for other clinicians/students.
